A fascinating read! Its a book I won in an AATE competition last year and finally got around to reading. It didn't take me long but I know I'll revisit this book going forward. A few takeaways from it:

1. Indigenous generally refers to flora and fauna and First Nations refers to traditional custodians,
2. Use plurals - cultures, languages, peoples, histories - rather than the singular,
3. Use texts about First Nations peoples written by First Nations peoples,
4. Ask what they'd like to share or not share - don't presume,
5. Text suggestions are great and some are on my TBR.

Definitely one to read if you're wanting suggestions on bringing First Nations perspectives into English, but I will say that the ideas explored and concepts discussed can be applied to any literacy-rich subject.

Dracula: Bram Stoker (Version 3)

Version 3, done and dusted! It changes point of view in same chapter so you read about the same date from different point of views. It was a struggle to read - not because I ready knew the plot; if anything, knowing it already helped me get through it. The beginning was very slow which is what put me off.

Two things I'm glad of:
1. I didn't give it to my Year 9s to use for their genre study, and
2. I read the kids and graphic novel versions first.

Building a Modern Australia - War and Conflict

In term 2, Year 10s study a unit, generally described as "Building a Modern Australia", looking at post-World War 2 society.
I generally break this unit in half; starting with Berlin Wall and the division of Germany, the formation of the United Nations, and finishing with the Vietnam War. This is the half of the unit that I have already created display for.

The second half looks at rights and freedoms for First Nations People, migrants, and women since World War 2. This unit is still to be taught (all prepped to go!) and the display is still to be made.

World War 1 Display

Another term, another display up! I popped in during the holidays for one day this time (normally, I try to do 2-3 days to smash out some work - AKA photocopying - without the students there) and I used it to swap over a display, file some paperwork, and set up a seating plan for my Year 10 English class. It wasn't much (in the scheme of what I usually try to achieve) but I'm happy with what I did do.

Year 9 Food Reviews

Year 9 Food reviews meant trying different snacks! I modelled the process in front of the students as they did it (trying to stop them from eating the snacks was not on my teaching Bingo card that day!) and it went off with a bang. They all enjoyed it and some of the reviews were pretty good and others were "Mars Bars are trash. I won't eat them."

It was a great end of day fun treat during Week 10 but they were incredibly disappointed to know that I wasn't going to put off the assignment until next term.

First time in a long time ...

Back on the books! After a couple of years out, it's been an adjustment returning to the study life but it's been great to stretch my brain and understanding of teaching pedagogies in different curriculum strands. Its also been great comparing (at least in my head!) the Australian Curriculum and SACE to the International Baccalaureate and how similar some of the concepts within the IB is to the new SA Curriculum.

Movement of People's Display

Our final unit for Term 1, in Year 9 History, is up! This one is Movement of Peoples and is honestly, not a unit that I've really gotten into teaching until now. It hasn't been one of my strongest ones so I made it a priority this year to do it justice.

Dracula - Kids Version Review

I would almost consider this a step up from the graphic novel, considering it is definitely text-heavy more than the graphic novel is but it is still easily accessible for kids. I'm not using this one for English this year but it's still a great help for me to wrap my head around the intricacies of Dracula. Now, to read the third (and final!) version!

Dracula - Graphic Novel Review

Dracula novel number 1 and the one that I'm focussing on with my 9 English class. I've never read Dracula until now, but it was a good read. The pictures brought it all to life, and I can't wait to teach it next term!

On to reading the next version I have!

Jury Service - Thoughts and Feelings

12/3/2025

When I got the call up for Jury Service, I knew it was going to be a juggling act but one I was happy to do. I could have asked for an excusal or a deferral but I chose to complete my Service at the start of the year - even thoufht it was at the start of a new school year. I had my study and moving to take into account. I do consider myself very lucky to work with some incredible educators who helped me out with planning units well into advance and leaders who were willing to catch me up on missed meetings.

Having said that, it was rough. By the time I had a week left, I was counting down the days I had left and praying I didn’t get called in. While I wasn’t attached to any cases and I found the process incredibly interesting, it was draining in ways I didn’t expect.

I began to hate the unknown of whether I would be called in (you’re basically on call for an entire month) and dreaded the 4pm text message the working day before. I haven’t been able to form solid relationships with some of my kids because I have been in and out for the whole month (don't get me started on their names either!). I knew that forming relationships with students would be tricky given the circumstances and I'm very blessed to have classes where they're not holding grudges and willing to work with me to memorise names and are willing to remind me of who is who.

I felt so incredibly rushed at the beginning of the term because I have high standards for my content, assessments, and how I design my classroom and while I was on Jury Service, I did not want this to slip.
I like to think I did fairly well with keeping these high standards but now, at the end of my Service, I am tired. Not just the long, busy tired but the bone-dead, exhausted tired. I’m craving routine, knowing that all I need to do is go to work, not go into the city and not even be called up to serve on a Jury.

Jury Service is valuable, I can see the value in it but I wonder if (given the teacher crisis) it is worth still having teachers as part of the Jury pool or if adjustments need to be made to make anyone employed as a teacher (inc. TRT’s) as part of the excluded professions.
